* Bank Robbery On The Rise *

Imagine this... it's lunchtime on payday, you get your check and run to the bank, hoping to hurry up and get most of it deposited (with a little taken out for the little necessities) and still get back with enough time to grab something to eat. You walk in to the bank, patiently waiting in line, and right before you get to the counter, someone walks in and announces they are robbing the bank.

If this was a different time, you would either be on a movie set or you would be stuck in a situation which you more than likely would never encounter. Alas, this is 2009, unemployment numbers keep reaching higher, houses are getting foreclosed on in record numbers, and people are getting desperate. Sure, you may live in an impoverished part of town, where robbery is considered more the norm, but with people needing money now more than ever, even the fancy bank in the rich part of town is getting hit. Frankly, I find it annoying more than scary; certainly there are better ways. If I can refer you back to the opening scenario, you can understand how I might be getting annoyed. I'm hungry and I just want to get my money into the bank as quick as possible so I can enjoy my lunch before heading back to work. Now, because some idiot that honestly thinks they are going to rob the bank and actually continue to get away with this (perhaps thinking they are going to score a few million dollars), now I'm stuck in the bank, probably lying face down on the ground, and I have to stick around even after they are gone to deal with the police.

Bank robbery is on the rise... no doubt about it. I can understand why a lot of bank robberies are occurring, and I suppose in some way I can relate to them. Movies like Heat have helped add drama, intrigue, and even the remote possibility that someone (or some group) can pull off a bank heist. I don't blame the movies, I blame desperate people with no consideration for anyone but themselves. I can honestly say that I've thought about robbing a bank... getting away with millions. The reason I haven't is not because I don't think I could get away with it and it's not the fact that money is heavier than the movies depict ($1,000,000 in $100 bills weighs 22lbs, and you probably won't get away with the million only in hundreds, so it will probably weigh substantially more). The reason I don't actually go through with it is that I would probably be the guy that would keep someone from returning from their break in time, and THAT I couldn't do with a clear conscience.
