* New Math *
When I was young, I was told I was wrong for thinking that
two plus two equals five. I was told I was mistaken, and that two plus two
equals four, plain and simple. If I thought otherwise, I was a fool.
This was back in 1986, when I was 8 years old... my how things have changed.
Now there's new math, and I was right!
If you are at all familiar with rounding to a whole number,
you should know that rounding up or down is based on a simple rule. If the
number is .49 or less, you round down, and if it's .50 or more, you round
up. For instance, rounding 2.1 to a whole number, you round it down to 2;
rounding 2.6 rounds up to 3. Now, following this mentality, 2.4 rounds to
what? That's right, it rounds down to 2. Now, if you add 2.4 and 2.4
(remembering that when rounded, that is 2 plus 2), you get 4.8, which when
rounded is what? That's right, it rounds UP to 5!
Although it only works on a technicality, there's no denying
now that 2 + 2 = 5! The teacher that said that was incorrect, well, now
who's the fool? Welcome to new math, a terminology and teaching that
came about within the past few years. Guess this 'fool' was thinking outside
the box and was years ahead of everyone!

an opinion based on personal experiences, and is intended to inform based on
those experiences.
