* Learning Patience *

I can be a very patient man, but I wasn't always like this. Anyone who has been around my immediate family long enough knows that is a trait that is highly apparent on my mother's side of the family. Although it was difficult initially, I did manage to finally learn how to be more patient.

In many aspects of life, patience is a highly coveted virtue, so it is of high importance to learn how to be more patient. I know, in these times of Instant Messaging and cellphones with internet access, it's hard to conceive of someone actually taking their time communicating with someone. Until a few years ago, I was all about the quick response, but with my jobs as a customer service representative, I realized I had to learn to be a lot more patient, lest I tick someone off and they not only verbalize their dissatisfaction but they take their business elsewhere (rendering my job useless). My mother was always quick to draw a conclusion and 'wrap things up', so that was what I was used to. I started taking the time to just shut up, think before speaking, and then make my point. As for when I was a CSR, I had to learn to not be hasty, as people despise being rushed even though they want everything done in a hurry. The last job I worked at was a call center for catalog ordering, and that job genuinely taught me to learn a lot about having patience... that was primarily because the typical customer was 40-75 years old, female, and pulled in an average of $45,000 per year salary. These women typically were very set in their ways and/or were hard of hearing, which meant extra patience was required to ensure customer satisfaction. If I had not had any patience, I would not have lasted there the 2 years I did.

I hope you realize that patience is a necessary part of your life. Patience should be used in both personal and professional situations, as it can make or break relationships. If you don't have much patience, don't worry... you just need to learn to practice shutting up, thinking before speaking, and THEN reacting. If I can learn to be patient, I'm pretty sure you can too... you just have to try; having patience with learning helps too!
